Private strand flush not complete

Today I got a message in the alert log which is new to me:

Thread 1 cannot allocate new log, sequence 607
Private strand flush not complete

Private strand flush not complete… sounds similar to checkpoint not complete. So the next step brought me to Metalink and there I found note 372557.1.

What you can read in there is that Oracle hasn’t completed writing all the redo information to the log at the logfile switch. It is also written that this is similar to a “checkpoint not complete” except that this only involves the redo being written to the log and that the log switch can not occur until all of the redo has been written.

The next thing: What’s a private strand?

Oracle says:

A “strand” is new terminology for 10g and it deals with latches for redo.

Strands are a mechanism to allow multiple allocation latches for processes to write redo more efficiently in the redo buffer and is related to the log_parallelism parameter present in 9i.

The concept of a strand is to ensure that the redo generation rate for an instance is optimal and that when there is some kind of redo contention then the number of strands is dynamically adjusted to compensate.

The initial allocation for the number of strands depends on the number of CPU’s and is started with 2 strands with one strand for active redo generation.

For large scale enterprise systems the amount of redo generation is large and hence these strands are *made active* as and when the foregrounds encounter this redo contention (allocated latch related contention) when this concept of dynamic strands comes into play.

There is always shared strands and a number of private strands .

Oracle 10g has some major changes in the mechanisms for redo (and undo), which seem to be aimed at reducing contention.

Instead of redo being recorded in real time, it can be recorded ‘privately’ and pumped into the redo log buffer on commit.

Similary the undo can be generated as ‘in memory undo’ and applied in bulk.

This affect the memory used for redo management and the possibility to flush it in pieces.

The message you get is related to internal Cache Redo File management.

You can disregard these messages as normal messages.

When you switch logs all private strands have to be flushed to the current log before the switch is allowed to proceed.

So all in all this isn’t a bug or an error. As said above it’s similar to the “checkpoint not complete” message and can be also handled that way!

Finally back at home

After three weeks in US and nearly one week in UK I’m finally back at home. Now it’s time for some work on the pics from vacation and some other stuff that was already waiting for me! :)

Btw: UK was also nice. I had the luck that there was good weather over there. My last visit in UK was 8 years ago.

Back again – away again

What’s the best thing when you’re back on the first day in the company after your vacation? When they tell you, that you should be already at the client! So it happened to me today. I’ll go to London tomorrow morning 6:00 AM and stay there at least for Thrusday doing performance tests and tuning. It’s not a bad thing – I’m currently be used to live out of the suitcase :) And it shows that at least someone missed me that three weeks – always a good sign! ;) So I’ll stay the next three days (or more, we’ll see) in London and be glad to see the city again (even when it’s just the street where the office of the client is located). The last time I was in London I was just 14. So let’s see how much the city changed – or how much I’ve forgot over the time…

Back from vacation

Finally I’m back from my vacation in the USA. All in all: It was great but I’m also glad to be at home again. Currently I’m very tired – just slept 2 or 3 hours and the jet lag…. So I’ll provide a more detailed update in a couple of days!

Vacation – Viva Las Vegas

We’re currently in Las Vegas (and yes: Again a Apple store where I’m writing! ;) ) and have a lot of fun here. Yesterday we went the first time out – something that you’ve to do when you’re in Vegas and it was great! Ok, I came in the hotel room at 5:30 AM and slept till 12:30 PM and I’ve also lost my watch (which will hopefully wait at the reception for me!) but it was just great! Las Vegas is amazing, it’s really a city full of entertainment. As soon as the night begins everywhere are amazing lights full of entertainment. There are also lot of famous cities reconstructed like Paris, New York of Venice. It’s cool over here, but unfortunately you’ve to have a lot of money so that you can enjoy everything in Vegas.

Today it will be our last day in Vegas. We’ll stay here over night and tomorrow we’re driving trough to Death Valley National to Lone Pine where we’ll spend the night. On Wednesday we’re going to visit Yosemity National Park and stay there. And on Thursday we’re driving back to our starting point: San Francisco. They we’ll give back our rental car and stay in a hotel next to the air port. Our flight back goes on 10:00 AM on Friday and we’ll be back in Munic on Saturday around 10:00 AM (15 hours to go there and a time shift of 9 hours).

I’m looking forward to come home again. I mean the trip is cool and we see and saw a lot, but 3 weeks isn’t such short as you think in the first moment. Anyway, this will be probably the last update from the vacation – not sure – so have fun!

Cheers,

Gerald

Vacation – update

Finally our vacation comes slowly to an end. Today we visited Bryce Canyon and tomorrow we’re going to see Zion Canyon. After that we spend three days in Vegas and then we’re going to San Fran over Death Vally and Yosemite National Park. And in a week at this time I’m already in the plane over the Atlantic bringing me back home!

Cheers from Bryce!

Vacation – another update

I’ve again free access to a wireless Internet connection, so here is another short update: Today we made it to the Grant Canyon and I just can say that it’s really impressive! I mean ok, for an Austrian who knows the Alps is isn’t really new stuff to see but anyway: Seeing some rocks which are older then 1 billion years and nearly 2 kilometers deep is also impressive! Comming up next: Page with Lake Powell and the day after Bryce canyon!
Cheers!

Vacation – Update the second

We are currently in the Apple store in LA and it’s 7 pm. Yesterday we were in the famous Universal Studios in the so called Universal city and had a lot of fun in the Waterword show and the Terminator 2 show. We also had a tour through the studios and saw the locations from Desperate Housewifes for example. Today we visited Beverly Hills (walkthrough on Rodeo drive, Beverly Blvd, …) and Hollywood. Of course we went on the walk of fame and visited the famous Chinese Theater where we made lots of pics of the in concrete embedded hand and footprints of the stars. Also we tried to reach the “Hollywood” letters which was very hard. Actually we didn’t make it up to them but we found a hill where we had a great view on them! And now for the last point of todays tour we visited the Grove shopping center in the middle of Beverly Hills where this Apple store is located.

Tomorrow we plant the visit a shopping mall to get some new SD-Cards for our digi cams and some mini DVDs for the camcorder – Yes, they are already full and yes, after one of the three weeks! ;) . In the afternoon we want to visit Bel Air and Santa Monica beach and of course sunset strip where we, or at least I hope to see some stars! Currently everything is fine over here and on Tuesday we’re going on with our journey to Joshua Tree National Park and Laughlin in Nevada where we’ll spend the night.

I hope I get another chance to get an internet connection (yeah…. in the hotel in LA we don’t have free access to the WLAN :( ) to post some more updates!

Till then I can just one thing say: Have fun!

We just arrived in Pismo Beach where we spend the night during the two days trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles. San Fran was a very very nice city. Tomorrow we’ll visit Santa Barbara and go on to LA. So far everything is fine here! Cheers
Btw: This post was written with my new iPod touch which I bought in the Apple store in San Fran! ;)
